stitching a french knot

Filed Under (Project Ideas & Articles, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 14-02-2007

We’ve had a few discussions about this on the boards so I thought I’d share something I found today that was very useful. I had been considering making some tutorial videos later this year for the site on how to cross stitch and how to finish certain projects, but I wanted to see if there was anything already out there like this for us and I was browsing on YouTube just out of curiousity. I came across this little set of four videos that show how to stitch a french knot.  I hope this helps a few people that were still having a hard time with these pesky little things that show up in our stitching all the time.  Personally I like to replace them with a colonial knot or a bead.

Talking the Tower of Cross Stitching Magazines

Filed Under (Project Ideas & Articles, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 12-02-2007

You have piles of you favorite Cross Stitch Magazines. Or maybe you donâ??t, and you are just starting out in this wonderfully addictive hobby. Either way you eventually come to the point where you look around, and think if I donâ??t find a way to tame the magazines Iâ??m going to drown, or one of the towers are going to fall and Iâ??ll be buried alive. May not be a bad way to go but personally I want to expire with needle in hand. Iâ??ve been lucky over the years where stitching friends have given me their Magazine collections when the hobby no longer interests them (I know horror but true).

Journaling Your Cross Stitch Project

Filed Under (Project Ideas & Articles, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 05-02-2007

(To help with journaling we have our free printable pages section!)There are as many different reasons for keeping a cross stitch journal as there are projects to keep track of! Some might keep one so that they can tell how many hours they put into each project. Another might keep one so they can go back and remember just what was going through their minds while they worked. Someone else might just like to keep a record of how far they got in one day. Whatever your reason, there are PLENTY of ways to make your journal as much of an enjoyment as your finished pieces. STNA Charity Stitchers are ready…

Filed Under (Charity & Crafting, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 26-01-2007

Are you ready? We’re getting ready to kick off stitching another quilt for charity. If you’d like to join us please stop by the Charity Stitchers section of the message board and chime in with your ideas! We would like to have a theme picked out sometime in the next two weeks so that we can get started. I’ll be setting up a poll after we get some ideas tossed around on the board. Our last quilt was great fun to stitch and the end result was beautiful! We even got some free patterns added to the website because of it. Now, I can’t promise that I’ll be able to crank out any new freebies this time around, but I’ll definitely be working on that this year. I have some charity specific freebies in mind already! No matter what you’re stitching on right now, happy stitches and I hope to see you on the boards.

No Sew Fleece Blanket Project

Filed Under (Project Ideas & Articles, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 22-01-2007

What you’ll need:

  • 1-2 yds. of print outerwear fleece
  • 1-2 yds. of a solid outerwear fleece
  • Tape measure
  • rotary cutting supplies if you have them, if not that is okay, just use the tape measure and a pair of scissors

How to make:
*Square your fabric edges by folding corners to meet flat edges and trimming to square it up.
*Remove the selvages (fabric fray)
*Place the two fabrics over each other, wrong sides together.
*Cut a 5″ square from each of the 4 corners
*To cut fringe, lay fabric on rotary cutting mat, (keep both together, you can pin them in the canter if needed, if you have a rotary or scissor that will cut through both yards at once) and cut strips 1 inch wide and 5 inches deep the whole way around the fabric. If your rotary or scissor wont cut both at the same time, that is okay just make sure to keep your strips evenly spaced.
*Using an overhand knot, tie the front and back fringe together (loop swoop and pull knot) the whole way around the blanket. Be careful not to pull too hard, you could stretch the fabric out and distort your blanket. In just an hour or two you have made a great, warm, cuddly snuggle blanket!
To make a pillow, cut a piece of fabric 15-18 inches square (15 for a 10 inch pillow and 18 for a 12 inch pillow) make it just like the blanket, except after you’ve done 3 and a half sides slide the pillow form in and then finish the 4th edge off. Blankets can be made ANY size ~ just purchase the appropriate amount of fleece for your needs. Blankets can also be made with ONE piece of fleece instead of two for a slightly lighter weight blanket, just be sure to buy double sided fleece with a reversible pattern and follow the same directions as above only using one piece of fabric.

Now, get cuddly on the sofa and enjoy your new blanket :)

New Free Cross Stitch Ornament Pattern

Filed Under (Free Cross Stitch Patterns, Stitching the Night Away) by Loretta on 07-11-2006

Just added this morning to our Free Cross Stitch Pattern Section a new ornament freebie for the upcoming holidays.  This has been a rough year for us.  I like to add ornaments to the site frequently, and this year I just didn’t get the chance to do that.  Hopefully between now and the end of the year I’ll be able to finish up at least one or two more designs for us to stitch together.  Happy Stitches Everyone! :)
