The holidays are coming whether we are ready or not! Most of us probably have some gift shopping we’d like to get done. What better holiday gift than one that benefits the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America? You’re giving gifts already, right? Why not give a gift that not only gives to those on your holiday list, but to every life that is touched by Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s affects more than 5 million Americans already, that alone is a huge number. Can you imagine how many people across the world it is affecting? Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Can you imagine what it would be like to not be able to enjoy your favorite hobbies like sewing and cross stitch? Or to be without your friends? It would be like being lost, in yourself. That’s what having Alzheimer’s can be like. But we can help. Technology is finding new things every day in the medical world and every little bit helps.
The gifts available at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America eStore are beautiful and usable. The pendant and bracelet are something that you can wear every day to show your support for this great cause. They’ll go with your casual wear and your business wear alike, so don’t be afraid to get one for yourself to wear and show off, and one for everyone on your gift list.
While you’re on the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America site, be sure to check out “A Quilt to Remember!” The AFA Quilt to Remember pays tribute to all those who have passed or are living with dementia, and their families, so that others can recognize the reality and enormity of this disease, and acknowledge that we stand united for optimal care and a cure. You can create a quilt panel in honor of someone close to you that has suffered with Alzheimer’s or you can buy additional quilt themed merchandise to further support Alzheimer’s research.

Something a little bit different to talk about today. We have reviewed several different charities and pointed out some current events in the past. This is one of those times. This petition is for a citizen’s initiative in order to provide “Portability of the Save Our Homes Assessment Cap.” Miami real estate may never be the same again. If you are so inclined stop by and view and sign the petition. If not that’s okay too!

I don’t know that I have a favorite, after all it’s hard to choose a favorite thing when the things you are donating to can be attached to such sad news. Most of the charities that I enjoy helping whenever I can are related to helping children, and cancer research. Those two types probably hit home for me the most. I’ll mention a few of the ones I like to get involved with here.
Love Quilts, as seen on the message boards makes cross stitched memory quilts for children with terminal illness and their families. Something special for them to keep them warm in a time that maybe otherwise dark and cold. Make a Child Smile is where you’ll find some LQ kids, MACS has been a source of support to children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses and their families. Emotional support is provided by creating the opportunity for people to visit the MACS website and learn about the children and their illnesses.
Locks of Love is also child related charity, and definitely one that I find touching. They make wigs and custom hair pieces for children who have lost their hair from disease or disease treatment. In fact I recently donated two 13 inch ponytails of my own hair to Locks of Love! With this charity you don’t have to donate dollars, hair is perfectly acceptable! And all types, textures, colors are welcome and can be either used in the hair pieces or sold at market value to help with the manufacturing costs. All the hair pieces are custom made and fitted for the recipient to look natural.
And then of course there are the many, many, many charities that cover cancer research. There are as many charities to raise money for cancer research as there are types of cancer. That’s both helpful and unfortunate. Hopefully someday we will have a cure for this awful thing that plagues us all.

I found this charity interesting. W often take the use of our hands for granted when being creative. I vaguely remember seeing a movie/documentary about a program similar to this when I was younger, and I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called. Helping Hands monkey’s are trained to assist with daily living for people with paralysis, spinal cord injuries, and other severe disabilities. In addition to the help they provide they also conduct public education programs that teach kids and teens how to avoid risky behavior that can lead to spinal cord injury. There is a monkey foster care program as well, which is an important part of helping the monkeys grow up to be able to assist people in the future.

We only have four stitchers so far for our quilt project, we need to have at least 12 stitched squares to make a decent sized quilt for Love Quilts. The voted upon theme was cartoons, and I know more than four people voted, so come on out of hiding and stitch with us.
Sign up here and let us know how many squares you would like to stitch.

This Relay for Life ribbon designed by Patricia Gregory is available at Patterns Online for only $5.00 and all profits from sales of these designs will be donated to the American Cancer Society at the Relay for Life Race in April. There are four versions of this ribbon, this one the main Relay for Life, then additionally you can stitch it as Caregiver, Fighter, and Survivor.
To learn more about Relay for Life you can visit their website. More than 3.5 million Americans take part in Relay For Life! That’s a lot of relay walkers and a great cause. Read about the history of Relay for Life, this is one of my top five favorite charities and events. You may even remember seeing it featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, one of the best episodes they did this past year. Grab a ribbon, support the cause, and help find a cure. Find a relay event near you to get involved.

Are you ready? We’re getting ready to kick off stitching another quilt for charity. If you’d like to join us please stop by the Charity Stitchers section of the message board and chime in with your ideas! We would like to have a theme picked out sometime in the next two weeks so that we can get started. I’ll be setting up a poll after we get some ideas tossed around on the board. Our last quilt was great fun to stitch and the end result was beautiful! We even got some free patterns added to the website because of it. Now, I can’t promise that I’ll be able to crank out any new freebies this time around, but I’ll definitely be working on that this year. I have some charity specific freebies in mind already! No matter what you’re stitching on right now, happy stitches and I hope to see you on the boards.

Here are a few of the blocks from the Love Quilts themed project we did in 2005 at Stitching the Night Away. More pictures will be coming soon. These particular blocks that the STNA members stitched were all designed by Loretta Oliver at Stitching the Night Away. You will find some of the word block designs in the free cross stitch patterns section there.
