Thank you for coming back to visit us again! Have you been to our main site, Stitching the Night Away to check out our free cross stitch patterns and cross stitch supplies?
Are you a Work-at-Home Mom or an Indie Designer of children’s clothing or toys? Or maybe you’re a second hand store owner? Maybe you’re a frequent shopper at the second had stores in your area, or online? Organic toy lover? If you are any of these, then these changes affect you. Big changes are in store that could affect your business and will be taking place on February 10, 2009.
As of February 10th, a pending legislative mandate will no longer allow the sale of used kids clothing or toys unless they’ve been tested for lead and a host of other potentially hazardous materials . While this sounds great on paper, the truth is that hundreds, if not thousands of people are going to be put out of business in one swoop of the governments hand. It will make selling handmade products illegal without getting the testing done.
The reach of this is much more than a few little shops and websites. This is going to affect kids, adults, families, schools, communities, and the entire nation as a whole. I beg you not to overlook this.
If the government really wanted to help they could stop the importing of crap covered in lead and hazerdous materials from China and other foreign countries and allowing it to be put on store shelves and sold without putting our own countries small businesses out of business. AquaDots anyone? How about Curious George toys?
The United States economy is already on a down slide, and this is taking any glimmer of hope these small businesses had for a good year and flushing it right down the toilet.
If you’re a Twitter user you can follow the conversation on Twitter by following the hashtag #CPSIA for fresh updates.
I encourage you to visit the Handmade Toy Alliance website where you will find loads of information about this new law, petitions to sign, and who to contact to Help Save Handmade!

Thanks for all this important info — especially the Twitter feed!
Other than contacting representatives what can be done? This is an important message that really needs to be spread. Appreciate your efforts to inform the community but lets find a plan to do more.

Thanks for the info, the twitter feed and the URL for the petition. CPSIA really hurts the ‘extra’ income for so many WAHMs. Why should smaller people like us pay price for the low quality goods imported by big players? Rather, the imported toys should be banned. let us spend more time spreading this message.

You just got me to join Twitter
. I will be coming back for that link.
Thanks for the twitter link.
This also would greatly impact groups like the red cross which sales a lot of clothing and toys to families who need it. I just don’t see this passing.

It definitely has a huge reach, I don’t think the government thought this through completely at all.
Hmmm…this is a slippery slope. I certainly don’t think the government needs to get involved. What I would like to see is a private company that specializes in children’s toy testing. Companies could then get a type of certification they could slap on their product to insure consumers of it’s safety. Consumers then would be tasked with only buying those products that had said certification. Am I dreaming? Probably. I just don’t like the government dealing with this.
Yeah, I agree with foil art, the government has gone too far with this new law. I can’t believe this is even happening. Why can’t they just focus on where the problem was, like china. They have the old philosophy of “shoot em all and let god sort em out!”
Unbelievable. Agree on the China statement, don’t forget the pet food incidents as well. Off to sign the petitions.
Hi, very nice work and ideas, keep up the good work and have a nice day!
