Violence against women affects no less than one in three women today. That statistic may be surprising to you in this day and age where women are no longer afraid to be independent. The truth is that fear, pride, shame, and a whole range of emotions that the rest of us will never experience or even imagine keep women from speaking out on a daily basis.

UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) is currently running a Say NO To Violence Against Women Campaign to attain 1 million signatures for this movement by November 24, to take a stand and build a community around this important cause. On November 25, UNIFEM and Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman will present these signatures to the UN Secretary General.

A good cause for a truly horrible thing. No one should be abused and hopefully this will diminish the numbers of violent acts against women. That is truly disgusting.

Thanks for the link… this is one campaign definitely worth supporting.

That is for a good cause. I’ve read tons of articles about women, especially in other countries that need help with these sort of things. I signed it and passed it on!

I was unaware of the 1 in 3 stat. That’s frightening. And as a society, we are so good at pushing these issues under the rug because we don’t understand them and ask, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” The answer to that is very in-depth, but for the women who do reach the point where they are able to make a change, it’s important to have this kind of support.
