Sew Entrenched
Sewing Permeates the Current Popular Culture
NEW YORK, NEW YORK ?? ??Sewing is everywhere; just keep your eyes open,? says the Home Sewing Association (HSA), the organization representing every facet of the sewing industry.
??There are so many magazines, catalogs and television shows that are incorporating the concept ofsewing into their advertisements, lifestyle settings and storylines,? offers Joyce Perhac, Executive Director of the HSA. ??While we??ve seen them in a variety of publications and mediums, the theme ??one of endless and enviable creativity afforded by sewing ?? is universal. There are abundant examples of this trend in a broad range of current media:
· In the June/July 2005 issue of Teen Vogue, ??Coca-Cola has a two-page ad encouraging
young women to be the envy of their peers by sewing a handbag with the statements to
??make it real?make it an over-heated sewing machine…make it transform a pile of scrap
fabric?make it doing the talking for you??. In ??The View? section, the editor??s employ two
young designers to show teens how to create a unique tank top with rinses, rhinestones
and of course, a needle and thread,? Perhac describes.
· Retailer Pottery Barn has also gotten into the act. In recent editions of their PBTeen catalog
and on their web site, the savvy furniture and accessories company styled a room around a
sewing machine. The fictional character, Jessica, who lives in the room, dreams of locking
herself in and sewing the night away. ??At HSA, we continuously promote the relaxing and
absorbing aspects of sewing and clearly the creative team at PBTeen is a believer.?
· Even super-retailer Gap has jumped in on the DIY craze for apparel. ??The last few store
sets in GapKids have featured so many items that teens and tweens can create, embellish
and make all their own. Just think how strong the message about unique and one-of-a-kind
garments is when it comes from an immensely popular brand like Gap,? she enthuses.
· A sewing machine has even graced the set of the hit television show, Gilmore Girls.
??Lorelai Gilmore, the incredibly hip mom of Rory, sewed and tailored costumes for the local
theater on her machine. In another episode, Lorelai was the only one her mother trusted to
alter her wedding dress for her re-marriage to Lorelai??s father. And if anyone knows the odd
relationship between Lorelai and her mother, that statement speaks volumes,? Perhac
details. ??Just think of how sewing bridged a gap between two very different personalities.?
Perhac concludes, ??These are just a few recent examples of how sewing is permeating the current
culture. It??s affirmation that sewing holds an important place in today??s busy and fast-paced world.
Be sure to keep your eyes open and you??ll see it as well!?
