Okay, so let’s get some reader involvement going today.  I’d like to hear your opinions on free patterns.  Do you as a crafter expect free patterns to be available to you?  How do you use your freebies?  Are they your main source of patterning, or are they a godo way to try out new designers and project styles?

I know in cross stitch and blackwork in particular this is sensitive subject with some designers and my views on the subject are probably in the minority ~ but I think freebies help the industry, they help spread interest, and they help us try new things.

Leave your thoughts here in the comments ~ or join us on the message board at Stitching the Night Away to discuss this topic.

And this topic doesn’t really pertain strictly to cross stitch, knitting and crochet have loads of free patterns available to crafters as well!  So let’s hear what you the readers have to say, whether you’re a crafter, a designer, a model stitcher, we want to hear your thoughts.

  1. I like to get the freebies. But they aren’t free anymore. The shops I go to have the pattern for free but packaged with the linen and buttons, those definitely aren’t free.

  2. Oh, I love those and I totally forgot to mention them. It’s a great way to introduce a new design style, and it’s a nice helper for shops! Helps them to entice customers to try a new kind of fabric, or a new kind of fiber without frightening them with something like a gigantic TW project to stitch on evenweave with blending filiments and beads and all the whistles -lol-

  3. I do love the freebies, and am extremely grateful for them, but don’t feel that designers should feel obligated to offer them. I use a lot of them , but also buy many patterns/kits. Freebies are a wonderful way to try a new designer/style. And they are a wonderful incentive by the desingers to entice stitchers to try, then buy their patterns.
